https://www.ndis.gov.au/stories/11639-ndis-support-gives-andrew-renewed-hopeWhen Camperdown resident Andrew began losing feeling in his feet, he never expected it would change his life so dramatically.

The 60-year-old had been working full-time when his mobility began to decline. Unable to stand for extended periods, he eventually had to give up work.

Despite doctors being unable to identify the cause of his condition, Andrew has remained positive and determined to stay independent.

For him and his wife, Nerida, the support provided through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has helped make that possible.

‘I don’t know where I’d be without the NDIS. It’s given me back my life,’ Andrew said.

Andrew’s NDIS plan provides access to a range of supports, including a physio, occupational therapist, support coordinator and support workers.

‘My plan covers all I need,’ he said.

At home, a wheelchair helps Andrew move around, while an electric scooter gives him the freedom to get to local shops.

Changes to the couple’s home have also made a significant difference. Handrails, an adjustable hand-held shower head and a plinth have been installed to improve safety and reduce the risk of falls.

A wider doorway, ramp and additional handrails have also restored Andrew’s access to the backyard.

‘For years I couldn’t access my backyard, so a wider door, ramp and handrails were installed,’ he said. ‘Now I can get a good grip on the handrails to pull myself up to do things.’

While Andrew is preparing for the possibility that his mobility will decline further, he says knowing support is available gives him reassurance.

‘Eventually, I’ll be in an electric wheelchair. I’ve talked to my planner about what my condition may look like as it progresses, even the supports I might need. It’s comforting support is available if I need it,’ he said.

The support has also meant Nerida can continue running her own business rather than becoming Andrew’s full-time carer.

For the couple, it means they can continue looking ahead while enjoying the country lifestyle they value.

‘It also means Nerida doesn’t have to be my full-time carer. She can still run her own business. She doesn’t have to stop and worry about looking after me.’
